In a magical land far, far away, storybook fairytales are sprinkled with dreamy filters and cotton-candy perfection. But that’s not always real life, is it?

With great expectations for motherhood, Marlissa Sheffield strolled into the hospital to deliver her first baby, but—much to her surprise—she could not walk out. Due to a rare series of events and severe nerve damage, Marlissa’s legs were left paralyzed. Thankfully, this condition did not last forever, but she did have to endure a long and grueling battle to recovery.

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalms 73:26

Today at The Messy Table, Marlissa is chatting with Whitney Reid and I about her unexpected, life-changing shift in perspective, as well as the surprising beauty that was hiding just beneath the surface. Join us!
